How does the sensor work?
The sensor registers impulses by detecting changes in the magnetic field, every time a dial turns around inside the gas meter. It can be installed in a non-intrusive way by simply attaching it to the outside of the gas meter, usually at a specific place.
-
How hard is it to build the sensor?
The hardware device was designed to be simple and easy to build: it is comprised of only a few commonly available microelectronics parts, and anyone with basic electronics and computer skills can build it and set it up to work.
-
Is it possible to purchase a sensor?
Currently it is not possible. Getting a hardware product certified for sale is a tedious process, it is much faster to teach people how to build it themselves. However, we are evaluating creating small crowdfunded batches in the future.
-
Is it legal to install the sensor?
Please check your contract and regulatory framework! In some cases the general terms of service by the gas company define the gas meter as their property, thus every alteration must be carried out with their permission. To be on the safe side, call your provider and ask them about the procedure if you wish to install a "magnetic pulse counter".
-
How safe is it to use?
Using an electronic device near a gas meter is of no risk in general terms. The hardware device contains no battery, so it will not catch fire or explode. However, if you feel uncomfortable placing an electronic device near your gas meter, we recommend you not to install the sensor.

Is it really free? If so, are the any advertisements?
Yes, everything is free of charge. No, we do not serve any advertisements. This is an open source, pro bono publico project.
